Maldivian Airlines First Wide-Body Aircraft Operations with Airbus A330-200 Maldivian, the national airline of the Maldives, marked a significant milestone by launching its first wide-body operations with the arrival of an Airbus A330-200. This marks a historic milestone in the airline's journey, which began in 2000 with just two aircraft. The ceremony was attended by the President of the Maldives, His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, as well as Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, other government officials including the Minister of Tourism and the CEO of Visit Maldives, along with senior representatives of the airlines at a special ceremony held at Velana International Airport. The addition of the Airbus A330-200 to the fleet is made at the 25th anniversary of Maldivian, marking the expansion of its capacity to connect the Maldives with more international destinations.
Island Aviation Services Managing Director Mr. Ibrahim Iyas, speaking at the event, underlined the significance of the new aircraft for the company's growth and for the tourism industry of the Maldives. He said, "With the introduction of our first wide-body aircraft, we are poised to expand our international flight capacity, open new routes, and connect the Maldives to long-haul destinations. This transformative step will strengthen our global position and play a key role in boosting tourism by making our islands more accessible to travelers worldwide.
The new Airbus A330-200 will carry 264 passengers across three cabin classes-18 seats in Business Class, 36 in Premium Economy, and 210 in Economy Class. It will allow for direct flights to three major Chinese cities-Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu, expanding Maldives' global reach and boosting the growth of tourism in the Maldives, particularly from China.
This wide-body aircraft will allow Maldivian to increase its long-haul flight capabilities, which would enable the airline to better serve its international routes and meet the growing travel demand between the Maldives and key global destinations.
As part of the celebrations, an airshow featuring Maldivian's Dash-8, DHC-6 Twin Otters, and ATR aircraft took place at Velana International Airport. The airshow, which was visible from Malé and Hulhumalé, was followed by the launching of a photo and videography competition, where prizes included stays at 5-star resorts and tickets on flights. It aimed to involve the community in celebrating the achievements of the airline.
The second event is the public festival "Maldivian Haveeree Ufaa," which will take place on 11th January, and full participation of all airline staff members. The activities will include interactive exhibits and live demonstrations focusing on the services and achievements of the airline, thereby developing pride and community because Maldivians are celebrating a major achievement.
