Dhaalu Atoll sits approximately 150 kilometres southwest of Male in the central Maldives far enough from the capital to feel genuinely remote, close enough to reach by seaplane in 45 minutes. Of the 56 islands in the atoll, only eight are inhabited. The rest are uninhabited reef islands, sandbanks, and the private resort islands that have made Dhaalu one of the most talked-about atoll destinations among guests who want luxury without the density of the central atolls.
The atoll is also known by its administrative name South Nilandhe Atoll, or Nilandhe Atholhu Dhekunuburi and is separated from neighbouring Faafu Atoll to the north by the Kandu Dheburieytherey strait.
What Defines Dhaalu Atoll
Dhaalu is not the most famous atoll in the Maldives. It does not have the manta ray aggregation of
Baa Atoll or the whale sharks of South Ari. What it has is a quieter marine environment in better condition than the more trafficked central atolls, resorts designed with unusual architectural ambition, and a lagoon quality that consistently draws positive comparison to the finest water in the country.
The reefs surrounding Dhaalu Atoll have more than 40 recognised dive sites. The absence of high-density resort development across the atoll has kept boat traffic low and reef health correspondingly high.
Manta rays, whale sharks, reef sharks, eagle rays, sea turtles, and pristine coral formations are found across the atoll's channels and thila sites throughout the year.
St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort - The Atoll's Defining Property
The
St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort opened in November 2016 on Vommuli Island and has defined the architectural character of Dhaalu Atoll ever since. The resort spans 22 acres and contains 77 villas 33 on land and 44 overwater designed by Jean-Michel Gathy with a visual language drawn from the island's marine environment. The overwater villas are shaped to reference the manta ray, the atoll's most iconic marine species. The main central building, the Vommuli House, takes its structural form from a banyan tree. The spa building the Iridium
Spa - emerges from the lagoon in the form of a giant lobster shell, with glass floors revealing the reef below.
The architecture here has a consistency and ambition that most Maldivian resorts do not achieve. Every building on the island contributes to a single design vision rather than being assembled from separate decisions over time.
The 77 villas include the John Jacob Astor Estate a three-bedroom overwater residence of 1,540 square metres with a private infinity pool, private beach, spa area, cinema, and fitness centre, named after the founder of the St. Regis brand. The Caroline Astor Estate on the beach is the two-storey land-based equivalent. Both estates represent the upper tier of villa accommodation available anywhere in the Maldives.
The standard overwater villas begin at 182 square metres with a 42-square-metre infinity pool, west-facing sunset orientation, a glass-bottom net lounge on the deck, copper soaking tub, and 24-hour butler service. The
house reef is five minutes from shore by boat and is accessible for both diving and snorkelling. Over 40 dive sites surround the atoll.
Seven dining venues cover Italian fine dining at Alba, Persian gastronomy at Orientale, Japanese kaiseki at T-Pan, sunset tapas at the Whale Bar, and a poolside buffet format. The Iridium Spa offers Ayurvedic treatments, Blue Hole hydrotherapy, gold-leaf facials, and sound-healing rituals.

Niyama Private Islands - Dhaalu's Active Alternative
Niyama Private Islands sits across two natural islands Play and Chill connected by boat within the resort's own private lagoon. The dual-island structure creates a genuinely unusual resort geography: Play is the activity island with the beach club, the water sports centre, and the Subsix underwater nightclub; Chill is quieter, more deliberately peaceful. Guests move between them by boat throughout the day.
The Subsix experience an underwater lounge-bar-restaurant that doubles as a music venue for weekend events is one of the most distinctive entertainment propositions at any Maldivian resort. The underwater nightclub format, which sounds gimmicky in description, has a specific and memorable quality in practice.
Kandima Maldives - Activity-Focused Mid-Luxury
Kandima Maldives is a larger, more activity-driven property in Dhaalu Atoll a 264-villa resort with a beach club energy, a comprehensive water sports programme, and one of the strongest dive centres in the atoll. The resort's positioning around energy and activity makes it a natural choice for guests who find the most hushed luxury properties slightly monotonous. The dive centre covers the atoll's major sites with guides who have genuine knowledge of local conditions.
Angsana Velavaru - Overwater Village
Angsana Velavaru in Dhaalu Atoll is notable for its overwater villa configuration a cluster of overwater bungalows positioned close together in a formation that creates a genuine overwater village atmosphere rather than the isolated individual villa format most properties use. For guests who want the overwater experience with a more social character, the configuration is genuinely distinctive.
Getting to Dhaalu Atoll
Dhaalu Atoll resorts are reached by seaplane from
Velana International Airport a 45-minute transfer. The seaplane operates daylight hours only. International flights arriving at Male after approximately 3pm risk missing the last seaplane departure of the day; an overnight in Malé or Hulhumalé is the standard solution when this occurs. Some properties offer alternative transfer arrangements confirm with the resort before booking if late arrivals are planned.
