Seenu Atoll - The Maldives' Most Historically Layered Destination

Seenu Atoll sits just south of the equator, 540 kilometres from Male, at the very bottom of the Maldivian archipelago. The southern tip of Gan Island is the southernmost point of the entire country. The atoll is also known by its administrative name Addu Atoll and by the city designation that covers its inhabited islands: Addu City, the second-largest urban area in the Maldives after Male.

Most things about Seenu Atoll are unlike the rest of the Maldives. Its history is unlike the rest. Its geography is unlike the rest. The dialect spoken here Addu Bas, a variant of Dhivehi that absorbed English words and phrases during decades of British military presence is unlike the rest. The landscape six interconnected islands linked by a 14-kilometre causeway called the Link Road, making it the longest continuous stretch of land in the country is structurally unlike any other atoll in the archipelago.

For travellers who want to experience the Maldives as more than an assembly of resort islands and turquoise lagoons, Seenu Atoll is where that different experience actually exists.

The British Military History

The most significant event in Seenu Atoll's modern history began in August 1941, when Royal Navy construction crews from HMS Guardian landed on Gan Island and began building a secret naval base designated Port T to take advantage of the atoll's deep, sheltered lagoon. The base remained unknown to the Axis powers throughout the early years of the Second World War.

The British Loyalty, a 134-metre WWII oil tanker, was torpedoed in 1944 by the German submarine U-183 through a gap in the anti-torpedo nets closing the atoll's channels. The tanker was subsequently used as a Ministry of War Transport storage vessel before being scuttled in the lagoon after the war. It now rests at 33 metres the largest dive wreck in the Maldives comprehensively colonised by coral growth and marine life, with blue-fin jack, turtles, manta rays, and sharks visible throughout the structure.

In 1957 the naval base was transferred to the Royal Air Force as RAF Station Gan, housing up to 3,000 personnel during peak activity periods. The British built the causeway network connecting Gan, Abuhera, Maradhoo, and Hithadhoo islands infrastructure that remains in daily use as the Link Road. RAF Gan was closed in 1976, leaving behind airport facilities, industrial buildings, barracks, and a population of English-speaking, internationally experienced workers who became foundational to the Maldivian tourism industry's growth in the following decades.

The Astra Cinema the RAF base's entertainment facility still stands on Gan Island, now repurposed but visibly colonial in architecture. Old barracks buildings, the runway that became Gan International Airport, and the causeway connecting the western islands are all direct legacies of the British presence.

The Short-Lived Suvadive Republic

In 1959, under the leadership of Abdulla Afif Didi, the southern atolls of Addu, Huvadhu, and Fuvahmulah declared independence from the Maldives as the United Suvadive Republic, partly in response to the perceived benefits of the British presence and partly from longstanding cultural and economic tension with the central government in Malé. The declaration lasted four years before an armed fleet sent by Prime Minister Ibrahim Nasir ended the breakaway state in 1963. Abdulla Afif Didi fled to the Seychelles, where he lived until his death.

The episode is not merely a historical footnote it reflects a genuine cultural and political independence streak that persists in Addu to the present. Locals describe their atoll with a distinct pride in its difference from the rest of the country, and that difference is tangible to visitors who take the time to understand it.

Diving in Seenu Atoll

The diving in Addu Atoll is exceptional and genuinely diverse a combination of wreck diving, channel dives, reef systems, and year-round manta ray encounters that few other atolls can match across all categories simultaneously.

The British Loyalty Wreck is the headline dive 134 metres of WWII oil tanker at 33 metres, the largest dive wreck in the Maldives, now a fully colonised artificial reef. The superstructure is draped in soft coral. Schools of batfish and blue-fin jack hang around the hull. Turtles rest on the wreck surface. For wreck diving enthusiasts, this is the most significant dive site in the country.

Manta ray encounters at Seenu Atoll are year-round. The best point is Muli Kolhu Faru a channel close to the remains of the WWII anti-submarine net where mantas gather for cleaning station visits throughout the year. Unlike the Hanifaru Bay aggregations in Baa Atoll which are seasonal and snorkelling-only the Addu manta encounters are accessible to divers at multiple sites year-round.

Shark Point holds a sandy plateau at 30 metres populated with dozens of grey reef sharks and whitetip reef sharks, with larger species cruising the deep drop-off beyond. The site lives up to its name reliably.

Maa Kandu and Maa Kandu Beyru are channel dives with beautiful coral walls and consistent pelagic sightings. The channels of Addu Atoll four natural openings into the lagoon have wider dimensions than most Maldivian kandu systems, which produces more manageable current conditions accessible to a wider range of certified divers.

Gan Inside is the beginner-friendly site a shallow dive within the lagoon with stingrays, turtles, and abundant reef fish accessible to newly certified divers or those building confidence in current conditions.

The Link Road and Island Exploration

The 14-kilometre Link Road connecting Gan, Abuhera, Maradhoo, Feydhoo, and Hithadhoo islands creates a travel experience unique in the Maldives: moving between islands by bicycle or vehicle rather than boat. Equator Village resort specifically provides bicycles to guests for exploration along the causeway a way of experiencing inhabited Maldivian community life at ground level that no other atoll provides.

Hithadhoo is the administrative capital of Addu City and the largest island in the group with local markets, cafes, government offices, and the Eidhigali Kilhi wetlands, a protected freshwater lake system home to the endemic white tern (dhondheeni) found in the Maldives only on Addu Atoll.

Meedhoo island holds Koagannu, the oldest Islamic cemetery in the Maldives a collection of inscribed coral stone graves dating from the earliest period of Islam in the country, with headstones bearing Thaana calligraphy of considerable historical significance.

Getting to Seenu Atoll

Gan International Airport (IATA: GAN) on Gan Island provides both domestic and limited international connections to Seenu Atoll. Domestic flights from Velana International Airport to Gan take approximately two hours and operate multiple times daily with Maldivian Airlines. Sri Lankan Airlines has operated direct international connections between Colombo and Gan. The domestic flight is by far the most practical access method.

A seaplane from Male is also possible but takes considerably longer and is rarely the preferred choice given the domestic flight availability and Gan's own international airport status.

Resorts and Accommodation

Shangri-La Villingili Resort and Spa is the flagship luxury property in Seenu Atoll a large island resort with beach and overwater villas, multiple restaurants, a golf course, a comprehensive spa, and children's facilities. The property is one of the most geographically distinctive resorts in the Maldives, with walking and cycling paths through native vegetation alongside the beach and water villa access.

Equator Village sits directly on the former RAF Station Gan the rooms are converted and refurbished barracks buildings with tin roofs, fully air-conditioned and modernised inside. The setting is genuinely unique: a resort inside a piece of WWII and Cold War history, with direct bicycle access to the Link Road and Addu City. The property operates at a mid-range price point and is the most historically interesting accommodation option in the Maldives.

Canareef Resort Maldives on Herathera Island offers family-friendly mid-range accommodation with comprehensive diving facilities and direct beach access at pricing below the luxury tier.

Guesthouses on the inhabited islands particularly Hithadhoo and Maradhoo-Feydhoo provide budget accommodation with direct access to local life, the Link Road, and the atoll's dive operators.
