Angsana Velavaru Celebrates World Tourism Day through an Educational Visit for Hulhudheli School Children
Angsana Velavaru commemorated World Tourism Day 2026 as part of the celebrations where eight school children and three teachers from the nearby island of Hulhudheli Island participated in an educational visit aimed at teaching tourism, resorts, sustainability and conservation of the environment. Organised before the world tourism day to be held on 27th September, the event marked this year’s theme, “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism” that shows how innovation and technology are important elements in making tourism smarter, more competitive and sustainable. For Angsana Velavaru, the event provided the students an opportunity to learn more about the industry while appreciating the importance of responsible tourism in the Maldives.
As part of the visit, the students toured different parts of Angsana Velavaru and went round different departments of the resort. This gave the students a first-hand view on what goes in a resort in addition to meeting both front line staff and those behind the scene. This was an eye-opener for the students about the many opportunities for career development in the hospitality and tourism industry. Sustainability is another topic discussed during the educational programme. It focused on the waste management system of the resort and resource conservation initiatives that include waste segregation, reduction, reuse and recycling. The students understood the way their every day actions can contribute to minimizing the negative effects on the environment and making the island environment cleaner and healthier.
The educational programme emphasized on the joint responsibility of associates and guests towards sustainable development. Knowing the way in which minor actions can contribute to environmental protection, the students got the understanding that sustainability is one of the crucial components of responsible tourism. Among other topics discussed in the programme there is the topic connected with the introduction of Angsana Velavaru's Marine Lab. Here the students had a chance to learn about coral reefs and their significance for the marine ecosystem of Maldives.
Currently, there are two coral rope nurseries and one coral garden that have been developed in the lagoon area of the resort. Additionally, there are some environmental protection projects organized by the resort including the coral planting and reef cleaning projects. The experience provided during the educational process enabled the students to gain a better understanding of the cooperation of tourism and environmental conservation. It prompted them to consider their responsibility concerning the conservation of the marine ecosystems and natural resources, which are essential for the tourism development in the country.
For the resort Angsana Velavaru, World Tourism Day is not only an annual holiday of tourism but also a chance to communicate with young people from the surrounding areas and show them the prospects of this industry. Thus, Angsana Velavaru is trying to motivate future careers and environmental awareness of the younger generation of Maldivians through resort operations, sustainable practices and marine conservation.
