During the inaugural cabinet meeting of the new government, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced the establishment of a special council focused on promoting tourism. This council, consisting of 22 members including members of the Council of Ministers, will be led by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu himself. This decision highlights the government's commitment to boosting the tourism sector and its importance to the country's economy.
During its inaugural meeting, the Ministerial Council discussed the implementation of the government's agenda, with a specific focus on the objectives outlined in the administration's 'Week 14' roadmap. As part of their deliberations, the Cabinet formed three distinct councils: the Visitor Economy Council, the Social Council, and the Economic Council. These councils will play a crucial role in shaping and guiding the government's policies and initiatives in their respective areas of focus.
The Visitor Economy Council was created under the direction of Mohamed Muizzu to improve the functioning of the tourism industry. During the first press conference, Mohamed Firzul, the Under Secretary for Public Policy in the President's Office, announced that the Visitor Economy Council would be directly overseen by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
Firzul, the council's spokesperson, emphasized that the main goal of the council is to promote tourism through innovative approaches. He highlighted the need to revitalize the tourism industry and expand its focus beyond vacation and leisure destinations. The President aims to include health, education, and transportation tourism as new areas of interest for the Maldives tourism industry.
In addition to the dissolution of the Tourism Council, the Economic Council and the Social Council have also been dissolved. Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef will now lead the Social Council, while Minister for Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed will head the Economic Council.
