Marine Biodiversity Program by Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives for the Students of Huraa School
The Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives hosted the Huraa School students for a two-day visit from 1st and 2nd September 2026 as a way of increasing their understanding of the fragile marine ecosystem in Maldives as well as motivating them to protect the ecosystem as future guardians of the Maldives. There were a total of 40 students, 5 teachers and 3 parents in each of the groups that participated in an educational program which included classroom sessions and conservation aimed at exposing the students to marine ecosystems and the importance of conserving them. The first session in the educational program was education on the importance of having healthy oceans to the marine life as well as to people living along the coastline. The students got knowledge on some of the biggest threats facing marine ecosystems including destruction of corals, ocean pollution and overfishing. In addition, the discussions also provided students with knowledge of wider environmental issues, which are relevant to the marine environment in Huraa. In connecting the concepts of conservation with their island and marine environment, students were able to have a practical understanding of the significance of marine protection in their community.
Reef Cube Project Introduction
Introduction to the Reef Cube Project of Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives was one of the key points in the program. The students had an opportunity to learn about the purpose of reef structures and how they can be used as a suitable surface for coral growth as a part of reef restoration process.Furthermore, the importance of coral reefs as contributors to marine biodiversity has been explained to the students. Coral reefs can help in developing new habitats for fish and other marine life as they grow on suitable surfaces. With the help of practical lessons, the students were able to take their classroom education one step further by gaining an understanding of how marine environment functions in practice.
Linking Conservation to the Local Community
The closeness of Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives to Huraa makes it possible to engage with the local community through conservation and educational programs.Inviting students to get familiar with their conservation efforts, the resort enables them to better understand issues related to marine sustainability. The field trip was also an opportunity for students to find out how conservation programs can help protect and restore marine habitats.This initiative demonstrates commitment to marine conservation and responsible tourism of Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives. The goal of the educational programs is to raise awareness about environment responsibility in young generation. As for the students who participated in this trip, they not only got acquainted with the issues of marine biodiversity, but they also gained deeper understanding of the importance of conservation of reefs and marine life surrounding their island. Educational programs that build environmental awareness from childhood and provide hands-on learning experience may be very useful for nurturing marine conservation culture in the Maldives.
