Seven Hatchlings Embark On The Ocean's Journey At Cinnamon Velifushi Maldives
Seven sea turtle hatchlings had just come out of their nest and started their amazing journey to the Indian Ocean. Tiny flippers carried them through the shore to the water where they immediately disappeared under the water waves. The brief moment was really amazing for those who were lucky enough to witness such a beautiful experience, however, the incident emphasized another aspect of Maldivian life. While Maldivian beaches are usually considered perfect vacation spots, there is a very significant role which is played by beaches in the Maldives - they are used as natural habitats for marine life nesting, hatching and surviving.
Although the distance between the nest and the ocean for a sea turtle hatchling is quite small and takes place on the beach, it is the first step of a long journey. Nesting sea turtles can be found in the Maldives all year round, with the nesting period being registered in most atolls of the country. However, the birth of the hatchlings is one of the most vulnerable stages of the life of these animals. Under the influence of the natural instinct, they head for the sea, but during the process, there are a lot of dangerous moments – the predators can catch them on the shore, as well as the artificial light sources can distract from movement to the sea.
