Now in their fifth decade of production music, The Church perform a extremely cinematic and special mix of indie rock, shining post-punk, icy dream-pop and psychedelic post-rock parting audience mesmerized. With the same innovative energy as the band’s untimely years, the five-piece line-up for ‘Under the Milky Way in the Maldives’ include group founder Steve Kilbey (Bassist and Vocalist), Tim Powles (Drummer and Producer across 17 album since 1994), Ian Haug (Guitarist joined in 2013, formerly of Powder finger), Jeffrey Cain (Multi-instrumentalist joined in 2020), and Ashley Naylor (Guitarist and long time part of Paul Kelly’s touring band).
“We are thrilled to continue our ancient relationship with the team at Music in Paradise who organizes these unbelievable events and to declare we are excited to have The Church on the program for 2025 is an understatement,” implicit Mark Eletr, General Manager, Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives.
The week-long 2025 Maldives music events which have become synonymous with Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma, join all the amazing attributes of an island getaway in the Maldives with several unbelievable performances says Mark. “When you focus a concert, you are generally some distance from the performer relying on big screen to see them close-up, but that isn’t the case now on the island. I imagine this is what makes the Music in Paradise event at Kandooma Maldives so unique. Our staff, the guests and organisers is really within stirring distance of their idols. The vibe is relaxed and peaceful. There’s nothing like bump into one of these performers at the buffet or division a tale over a beer barefoot on the sand. It’s a very unique experience.” added Mark.
While the band’s early album Of Skins and Heart, The Blurred Crusade and Heyday were admired, it wasn’t awaiting the 1988 album Starfish that The Church broke into the typical, with ‘Under the Milky Way’. More lately, their 26th album The Hypnogogue launched in 2022 and their world tour, has been credited to a band revival where unique and new material was met with admire and approval.
Rolling Stone renowned Kilbey’s great bass playing, Vive Le Rock, score it 9 out of 10, while American Songwriter highlighted the band’s fluid moods and shadowy technique. Classic Rock much-admired Kilbey’s performance as one of his top.
