On January 2, 2024, Velana International Airport (VIA) set a new record by welcoming 649 seaplanes in a single day, surpassing last year's record of 635. This achievement highlights the growing appeal of the Maldives as a top tourist destination.
The increase in seaplane travel is linked to the significant rise in tourism seen in 2023, which recorded the highest number of visitors in the nation's history. The Maldives welcomed a total of 1,878,537 tourists, further establishing its position as the World's Leading Destination for the fourth year in a row.
As the island nation continues to draw in tourists, airport authorities are advising passengers flying through the airport on January 7, 2024 to expect heavy traffic. The airport is recommending that international travelers arrive at least three hours in advance to avoid long lines and possible delays.
Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA) is the largest seaplane operator in the Maldives with the world's biggest seaplane fleet. The new seaplane terminal, a USD 55 million (MVR 848 million) project by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), covers an area of 3.2 hectares.
