You have to look for it deliberately. It sits alone on the map, well south of every other atoll, not connected to any chain. No lagoon. A freshwater lake in the middle of the island that has no business being there given everything around it is saltwater. Waves that actually break on the shore. And a column of open ocean that funnels in marine life the northern atolls rarely see - tiger sharks, thresher sharks, hammerheads, oceanic mantas feeding near the surface.
Alafehi Retreat is where you stay.

What Other Sites Don't Tell You About Alafehi Retreat
Fuvahmulah has no lagoon. Unlike most
Maldivian islands, the water here is open ocean. Currents can be stronger than guests expect. The snorkelling is excellent but it's not beginner calm-water snorkelling. Know the difference before you arrive.
The tiger shark dive has a current. It's not a casual reef dive. Experienced divers describe it as one of the most exhilarating dives in the Maldives. Beginners should do a few warm-up dives first.
Alcohol is not available on Fuvahmulah. It's a local inhabited island. Plan accordingly.
The
domestic flight from Male takes about 90 minutes. It's not a seaplane it's a scheduled domestic flight, which makes it more affordable and more reliable in bad weather.
The freshwater lake is genuinely worth visiting. Most guests focus entirely on the marine life and never go. It's one of only two natural lakes in the Maldives and it's strange and beautiful in a completely different way from the ocean.

Insider Tips
Book the water villa and request the one with the least obstructed ocean view. Not all water villas face the same direction and the difference matters at sunset.
Pack reef-safe sunscreen. The retreat and Fuvahmulah community take marine conservation seriously. Standard sunscreen is frowned upon
Ask the dive team about the current schedule before booking
