Velaa Private Island, located in the beautiful Maldives, is not only known for its luxurious offerings but also for its commitment to sustainability. The resort has been actively involved in its CSR initiative, Fehikuramaa, for the past three years. Through this initiative, Velaa Private Island aims to promote a conscientious approach to living within the Noonu Atoll, ensuring the preservation of the natural beauty and resources of the area.
Fehikuramaa is a program that was launched in 2021 in response to the urgent waste management issues in the Maldives. Over time, it has developed into a comprehensive initiative that encompasses various aspects of sustainable development and environmental preservation. The program aims to address challenges such as ocean pollution and food waste by implementing measures like home composting. Additionally, Fehikuramaa seeks to extend its impact to nearby Local Island communities, helping them build resilience against the growing solid waste crisis. Through raising awareness, providing training, and offering unwavering support, Fehikuramaa strives to foster a culture of sustainable waste management and promote an environmentally friendly mindset.
Velaa Private Island is taking a proactive approach to environmental sustainability with the launch of the Fehikuramaa initiative. Fehikuramaa, which means "Let's make the environment greener" in Dhivehi, is a home compost and gardening program that aims to reshape waste disposal and management practices across the Maldivian islands. Wayne Milgate, General Manager of Velaa Private Island, highlights the importance of this initiative and the support it has received from local communities and the younger generation. Fehikuramaa represents a collective commitment to a sustainable future and the preservation of the pristine beauty of the Maldives.
The CSR initiative plans to conduct comprehensive awareness programs, waste management initiatives, and sustainability guidance sessions on all 13 inhabited islands of the Noonu atoll. These sessions will be led by experts in the field, who will follow established guidelines and the regulatory framework of the Maldives.
Velaa Private Island has taken concrete steps to support their environmental awareness initiatives. They have provided reusable water bottles and tote bags to local communities, installed water dispensers in schools, and donated waste segregation bins to all the islands in the atoll. Furthermore, their school sessions educate students on important topics such as recycling, reducing single-use items, waste separation, composting, littering, and environmentalism. These efforts demonstrate Velaa Private Island's commitment to promoting sustainability and protecting the environment.
Fehikuramaa is more than just an initiative; it is a movement towards sustainability in the Maldives. Velaa Private Island is leading the way in preserving the delicate balance of the atolls and inviting communities to join in this effort. It is a ripple of change that aims to protect and sustain the unique ecosystem of the Maldives.
