Celebrating Three Years of the “Fehikuramaa” Programme at Velaa Private Island

Velaa Private Island is taking a proactive approach to environmental sustainability with the launch of the Fehikuramaa initiative. Fehikuramaa, which means "Let's make the environment greener" in Dhivehi, is a home compost and gardening program that aims to reshape waste disposal and management practices across the Maldivian islands. Wayne Milgate, General Manager of Velaa Private Island, highlights the importance of this initiative and the support it has received from local communities and the younger generation. The CSR initiative plans to conduct comprehensive awareness programs, waste management initiatives, and sustainability guidance sessions on all 13 inhabited islands of the Noonu atoll. These sessions will be led by experts in the field, who will follow established guidelines and the regulatory framework of the Maldives.

Velaa Private Island has taken concrete steps to support their environmental awareness initiatives. They have provided reusable water bottles and tote bags to local communities, installed water dispensers in schools, and donated waste segregation bins to all the islands in the atoll. Furthermore, their school sessions educate students on important topics such as recycling, reducing single-use items, waste separation, composting, littering, and environmentalism.
