Explore Beaches & Local Life on Maafushi Island

Maafushi Island is a picturesque small island which boasts its wide sand roads and absence of any vehicles except motorbikes. There are two beaches on the island—the public one and the Bikini Beach that was designed for tourists. The Bikini Beach located in the north part of Maafushi and reconstructed in 2017 is intended for guests only; it is the only place where tourists may enjoy bathing and tanning wearing swim suits. On all other territories, people should wear proper attire covering their knees and shoulders because it is a demonstration of respect toward the local Muslims.

The beach is not very big so one has to arrive early to get his sun chair (between 8 and 9 AM). Further in the day one can sun himself sitting under palms or lying on a towel. It is convenient to drink some juice or eat some fruit bought in cafes near Bikini Beach, such as papayas, pineapples, and mangos. The lagoon around the island is shallow and crystal clear, making it ideal for water-based activities like wading, snorkeling, and the study of underwater wildlife, including marine animals and corals. Being a very calm body of water, it can be ideal for people with kids. On the other side of the beaches lies the prison for the country of Maldives, which is located at the southern tip of the island.
