The hardwood floors are a deliberate material choice that separates WhiteShell's rooms from the tiled or laminate interiors common at newer Maafushi properties. Book the night fishing trip for your first or second evening. WhiteShell's night fishing runs on small boats with experienced local fishermen. It books up during peak season. Reserve it before you arrive rather than waiting until you feel settled — the experience is worth building your first two evenings around.

Eat at Platter Restaurant for at least one Sri Lankan meal. The Sri Lankan rice and curry lunch is a genuine interpretation rather than a tourist approximation. Maafushi has many restaurants but very few that execute Sri Lankan cuisine properly. WhiteShell's kitchen does.

The sea-view balcony rooms overlook the beach channel where dolphins appear at dusk. Ask specifically for a room facing the channel side. The dolphin-watching trip is great — but watching a pod swim past your balcony uninvited is better.
