Vevu Villa Fenfushi

Fenfushi is one of those South Ari Atoll islands that almost nobody researches. Most people searching for whale shark access in South Ari Atoll find Dhigurah (three to four guesthouses, documented extensively) or Dhangethi (three guesthouses, also documented). Fenfushi has a handful of guesthouses, very few tourists at any given time, and the same resident whale shark population feeding ten minutes from the shore.

Vevu Villa Fenfushi has six rooms. Host Mauroof Mohamed runs the property personally and arranges everything the whale shark excursions, the manta ray trips, the dolphin watching, the fishing. Guests describe the experience as being looked after by someone who genuinely knows these waters and the specific animals in them.

The whale sharks are ten minutes by boat. The manta rays are thirty. At low tide, a one-kilometre sandbank stretches from the island toward the next one, almost bridging the gap. You can walk it. Almost nobody else will be there.

The Rooms - 6, Simple, Properly Equipped

Six rooms means Mauroof and the team know every guest personally. The rooms are functional and comfortable: air conditioning, TV, wardrobe, dressing table, private bathroom with shower, and beds with 10-inch thick mattresses and two pillows per guest. Simple but properly thought through.

The specific mattress detail matters. Most local island guesthouse mattresses are adequate at best. Ten-inch thickness is above average and produces measurably better sleep — important when you're waking up at 6:30am for whale shark excursions and need to have rested properly.

The 1km Sandbank - The Feature No Other Review Covers

At low tide, a sandbank stretches from Fenfushi Island toward the next island approximately one kilometre of white sand emerging from the Indian Ocean. You can walk it from end to end. At the far point you're standing in the middle of the ocean with water visible on both sides and the horizon in every direction.

This is not an excursion. It costs nothing. It requires checking the tide times and walking to the beach at the right moment. Mauroof can tell you exactly when low tide falls during your stay.

Insider Tips
Tell Mauroof on arrival that you want to find frogfish and leaf fish on the house reef. He knows the specific coral heads where they hide. These species are invisible to untrained eyes but produce the most memorable underwater photographs of the stay the kind of thing even experienced divers don't find without local guidance.
Ask Mauroof what time low tide falls during your stay. The 1km sandbank is the specific natural feature that makes Fenfushi unlike any other inhabited island in South Ari Atoll. Being there at peak low tide when the full kilometre is above water is the experience. Arriving 30 minutes late and finding it already disappearing under returning water is not.
Do the whale shark excursion on day two, not day one. Use your first afternoon to snorkel the house reef and find the eagle rays and reef sharks. Understanding the water conditions makes the whale shark excursion on day two significantly more comfortable and enjoyable.
