URJA Naturopathy Island Opens at Kuda Huraa

Four Seasons Kuda Huraa Launches URJA Naturopathy IslandThe Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa has launched URJA Naturopathy Island – a new facility offering a unique experience to explore holistic wellness through more than just spa treatment. Named after the Sanskrit term meaning “vitality,” URJA integrates naturopathic practices, science and personalisation to create an experience which will allow people to restore themselves better. Unlike the short-term wellness fads and quick relaxation solutions, URJA takes care of sustainable wellness of its guests. The philosophy of this facility blends natural healing, ancient knowledge and contemporary expertise to help them comprehend their body and adopt certain practices which can help maintain their vitality.Wellness From A Holistic PerspectiveHolistic approach forms the core of URJA. The programs offered by it incorporate aspects such as nutrition, exercise, detoxification and energetic wellness. Education and personal empowerment are of high importance for the facility. It is recommended that guests get informed about their body’s natural rhythm, about the necessity of proper nourishment and how they can implement small but consistent changes in their lifestyles. Diagnostics, consultation and personalized recommendations provide guests with information they will be able to use long after their stay on the island ends. The experience also recognizes the importance of the power of silence. Disconnecting from the constant stimulation they are used to getting in the modern world, guests get the chance to slow down, connect with the nature surrounding them and with their own breathing. A large number of URJA treatments also uses AION A, a mineral discovered by Swiss naturopathic researcher Emma Kunz (1892-1963) in the ancient Roman quarry in Wurenlos, Switzerland. This mineral is used in some treatments according to the idea of natural wellness of the island.Naturally InspiredGuests arrive on the island on the traditional Maldivian cuisine boat called dhoni, thus starting their experience with traveling on the ocean towards the destination point. The island itself fully utilizes the natural surroundings, particularly the ocean, with overwater treatment suites and outdoor activities based on the rhythm of the water. Four major naturopathic pathways are available on the island – Rest & Rebalance, Cleanse, Nourish and Reconnect. Every programme begins with a consultation provided by one of our Naturopathic practitioners. Guests have an option to choose additional tests such as micronutrient test, iris diagnosis and postural map to get more data on their overall well-being condition. The list of treatments includes Mud Therapy, Heliotherapy, Life Force Healing, Magneto Therapy, and Sound Healing. All the treatments are based on Yoga Therapy and various naturopathy practices including fasting, acupuncture and full-body alignment practices. In addition, there are certain signature treatments such as the Vagus Reset, which is a calming treatment derived from the vagus nerve and the Night Spa Ritual taking place outdoors, symbolically connected to the night sky. Furthermore, at URJA, we offer special programs developed by Naturopathic Doctors from our team. We help our guests to cope with sleep disorders, take care of liver and joints health, etc.Healing GeometryThe philosophy of URJA was also inspired by a Swiss naturopath and artist Emma Kunz. Four Seasons has unique access to the geometric drawings of Emma Kunz and uses them in the URJA treatment menu. Based on universal patterns and principles, these artworks add another layer to the island philosophy of harmony, balance, and natural energy. With its combination of naturopathic expertise, personal programs, natural environment, and education, the URJA Naturopathy Island is a unique wellness solution in the Maldives. Contrary to mere relaxation, it offers our guests an opportunity to learn about health and acquire skills that will allow them to continue their journey towards wellbeing after they leave our island.

Tourism Ministry Warns of Action Over Unpaid Resort Rents and Fines

Maldives: The Ministry of Tourism has warned resort operators and other tourism leaseholders that enforcement action will be taken against those who do not make rental payments and pay fines and other sums due to the state. The ministry said in a statement on Monday that it would take action against tourism leaseholders who had failed to meet their financial obligations under the Tourism Act and other regulations. The action would be aimed at operators of tourism properties that had fallen behind on lease payments and penalties, or those that had stopped operating their tourism facilities without the ministry’s approval and still owed payments under their leases. Leaseholders Urged To Pay Arrears The ministry reminded tourism leaseholders of their duty to meet the lease requirements and pay any sums due to the state, and told them to clear their arrears. Tourism operators leasing islands, land and other real property were to pay lease rental payments, fines and other amounts due under leases. “The Tourism Act provides grounds for enforcement action,” the ministry said. Tourism properties could be confiscated Tourism operators were cautioned that they may be declared forfeited under the Act and tourism operators who did not meet their payment obligations under their leases could face further penalties. The ministry did not say how many leaseholders were behind on payments or when enforcement action would begin. The ministry also reminded tourism operators of the obligations in their leases. The ministry said it will take enforcement action against delinquent tourism leaseholders, in accordance with the Tourism Act and other laws and regulations governing tourism leases.

Soneva Jani Becomes Maldives’ First Resort Recognised as OECM Editorial

Soneva Jani Becomes Maldives’ First Resort Recognised as OECM

Soneva Jani, the first resort in the country to be declared an Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measure (OECM) by the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy has received official designation. The OECM status is a welcome addition to the resort’s ongoing commitment to conserving the Maldives’ natural resources, while providing guests with a luxury hospitality experience. Conservation Milestone at Maldivian Resort Soneva Jani’s OECM status is a milestone in the resort’s history and a new benchmark for conservation in the hospitality sector in Maldives. An OECM is a geographically defined area where sites and areas are designated for the purpose of conserving and maintaining ecosystems and species regardless of whether the sites and areas are not intentionally managed as protected areas. Soneva Jani has identified 0.41 square kilometres of its eastern leeward region of Medhufaru island as its OECM. The OECM includes a range of reef, beach, mangrove and wetland habitats that provide a range of benefits to the local biodiversity of the region . Contributing to 30x30 for the Maldives. Soneva Jani is happy to support the conservation efforts of the Republic of Maldives to reach the 30×30 target. The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework has set a target to protect 30 percent of land, inland waters and oceans by 2030. This target is reinforced by Soneva Jani’s designation which is an example of a successful resort-hosted conservation area which effectively protects biodiversity. Wetlands and Reefs to Save The habitats within Soneva Jani’s OECM are key to conserving and maintaining the biodiversity found within and around Medhufaru. The area is a breeding ground for Hawksbill and Green turtles, both of which are protected under Maldivian law. The protection of the reef, beach and wetland habitats of this OECM and the biodiversity they support will have wide impact in the region. The area’s mangrove and wetland habitats support a rich diversity of biodiversity and provide a range of other environmental benefits. The vegetation plays a crucial role in protecting the shoreline naturally, as well as filtering water and sequestering carbon, which are important for the wellbeing of the Mdhufaru area. Such natural defences are especially important for island regions such as the Maldives. Ecological Surveys Reveal Rich Biodiversity Following a year of extensive ecological surveys, research and documentation, Soneva Jani was awarded OECM status. This was made possible with the support of the Waitt Foundation, and the cooperation and collaboration of the Soneva Jani team, and was carried out by Soneva Conservation & Sustainability Maldives. Research has been vital throughout the year to learn more about the region’s rich biodiversity and identify areas that need more conservation work. Soneva Jani builds on science-based conservation practices to harness not only the local ecology, but to make a major contribution to wider regional and global conservation efforts. Luxury Hospitality and Conservation Can Be Done Together Soneva CEO Neil Gallagher was quick to point out the achievement proves conservation and luxury hospitality can go hand-in-hand. “Soneva Jani is proof that tourism and conservation can co-exist,” said Gallagher. Designating the Resort as an OECM exemplifies the opportunity for conservation-friendly operations to be conducted at Soneva Jani and, by extension, the greater Maldives region. Soneva’s OECM status reflects the company’s unique ability to protect the very environment that its guests come to experience. Ongoing Dedication to Conservation The OECM designation of Soneva Jani is a major milestone, but only the start of the company’s long-term commitment to ensuring that the resort maintains its conservation practices. The resort has a five-year review cycle for its OECM designation which means that the management team will be undertaking an annual assessment of the area to ensure that the conservation objectives of the OECM are being met. “Our teams’ commitment to conservation goes beyond the award of OECM status,” said Dr Johanna Leonhardt, Director of Operations, Soneva Conservation and Sustainability Maldives. Their key concern, she said, is to ensure that they achieve lasting, verifiable gains for nature and its biodiversity. Developing a New Model of Eco-Resorts The designation of the first OECM resort in the Maldives, Sonvea Jani, presents a crucial opportunity to set a new standard for sustainable luxury hospitality. Soneva Jani’s conservation successes show that a luxury resort can go beyond typical conservation activities and provide lasting environmental benefits for the local area. Soneva Jani, a resort that prides itself on the luxury experience that is second to none, understands the importance of protecting the natural resources that bring people to the Maldives. The OECM designation is yet another feather in Soneva Group’s long list of conservation achievements. Soneva Jani’s status as the first resort OECM in the Maldives is a powerful reminder to the international hospitality industry that sustainability and luxury can go hand-in-hand, if there is a will to make it work.

The island reported six nests this year, mostly green sea turtles. Nesting can occur throughout the year in the Maldives but the high season in Raa Atoll is June and July. First wild hatchlings hatch The first hatchlings of the season emerged in the evening of 22 July, two months after the laying of their nests. The birth of the babies is a major milestone for the Marine Biology team at InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort and a once-in-a-lifetime experience for lucky guests who witness it. In nesting season, the resort’s Marine Biology team follows research protocols and monitors the nests on a regular basis. The work and observations of the team further add to the science of sea turtles and their nesting and breeding patterns. Maldives Green Sea Turtles Protection They are found in the waters of the Maldives, and are protected species. Each nesting in the country is vital for the survival of the species. That said, every green sea turtle that has been recorded nesting in Maamunagau adds to the growing body of research on the species by the resort’s Marine Biology team. The nesting season is a perfect time for the team to monitor activity, and for the resort to participate in conservation of the beautiful green sea turtles. Cooperating with Conservation Organizations InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort works in partnership with several conservation organizations to protect the local sea turtles and other wildlife. The Manta Trust works alongside the resort to help and undertake the necessary research on the marine species visiting the area, while the Olive Ridley Project also helps with conservation. The information collected allows us to find ways of protecting the ecosystem of the region and also contributes to the understanding of the migratory patterns of the species. Ethical Animal Encounters As the hatchlings emerge the guests of the resort are treated to a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to connect with the marine wildlife of the region. That said, visitors should be aware that the observation of the little swimsuits must be done carefully and with consideration for the welfare of the young turtles. It is recommended to keep a safe and sufficient distance from the hatchlings and not to apply artificial lighting on them. This is because the lights can interfere with the turtles’ natural instinct by not allowing them to get to the sea. Connecting Guests to the Marine Environment Marine conservation activities at the resort are focused primarily on research and protection, but also aim to educate guests about the wonders of the surrounding ecosystem. This is complemented by work from organizations such as The Manta Trust, giving guests at InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort the opportunity to interact responsibly with the local wildlife. From the hatching of the green sea turtle hatchlings to the extensive range of marine activities available at the resort, those who want to visit the Maamunagau islands have a golden opportunity to get up close and personal with the incredible wildlife of Maldives as well as learn and appreciate the beauty of the ocean’s creatures and their natural environments. Lasting Legacies in Conservation The nesting season is ongoing and InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort will continue to monitor with the first hatchlings of the season marking another step in the resort’s continued contribution to marine conservation. The Maldives is one of the most important nesting sites for green turtles so ensuring the species continues to thrive is even more important.

RAAYA by Atmosphere: Where Island Exploration Becomes the Destination Editorial

RAAYA by Atmosphere: Where Island Exploration Becomes the Destination

At RAAYA by Atmosphere curiosity is where the inspiration starts. Located on one of Raa Atoll’s largest natural landmasses, the resort’s varied landscapes, range of activities and hospitable environment are all designed to make guests feel encouraged to explore, making everyday discoveries. Drawing on the connotations of castaway as the eponymous character Seb, the team at RAAYA have created a space where wandering, wonder and wellness can be central to the stay. From winding paths and breathtaking views to bustling public spaces and palm-lined beaches, this is an island that will make you want to get out and explore the world. An Island Made for Discovery RAAYA is defined by the sense of space. Guests can amble, not race against the clock, thru the resort’s tropical plantings, past restaurants, beaches and activity hubs along broad walkways. The same philosophy applies to the lagoon surrounding the island which takes on a new dimension when you view it from above and below the water with snorkelling, paddle boarding and canoeing available to truly engage with the landscape. RAAYA Hub: All Parties Come Together The RAAYA Hub is a social space that reflects the resort’s philosophy of space, stimulation and discovery. The area features a padel court, mini golf course and BMX track, all set between open-air lounges, so that families and friends can enjoy a competitive game, then sit back and relax with a cool drink. Seb’s Shack is another alfresco eatery where people-watching is part of the package. Whether it’s a game of padel at dawn or a drink at dusk, the relaxed tempo and languid service is the perfect accessory to a day of lively discovery. For families, the Discovery Den Kids Club offers young guests a chance to connect with the story of Seb thru a range of creative play, outdoor activities and imaginative excursions. Finding Quiet Time RAAYA is a place to rest, a place to reflect and an island to discover. ELE|NA Ayur is a wellness destination that offers unique experiences based on individual preferences, offering yoga, treatments and traditional rituals as a form of interaction with the local landscape. Sunrise session or sunset massage, stillness is a time to switch off and begin again. Dining On the Island At RAAYA , dining is another opportunity to enjoy the island environment and interact with the local landscape. Get the resort’s energy with international dishes and a selection of live stations at RAAYA Life or sip cocktails and light bites with views of the pool and ocean at the SOAQ Pool Bar. If you fancy a taste of la dolce vita, then The Village serves freshly made pasta and rustic Italian dishes, while Seb’s Shack is an alternative spot for light meals and sunset drinks. Meanwhile, MIZĀJ offers a relaxed Middle Eastern-inspired menu in a contemporary setting, and Seb’s Farm offers a truly unique dining experience with dishes made with fresh, local produce foraged and farmed on the island. AMPERS&ND: Relaxed Beachfront Dining AMPERS&ND is located on the edge of the beach in a large outdoor space, a great opportunity for relaxed beachfront dining with stunning ocean views. Long wooden tables, the raised bar are perfect for a lazy lunchtime or long evening's drink looking out to the open ocean. With the choice of dining either in the garden or upstairs at the bar, the unhurried pace makes for perfect conversation with time to stop and appreciate the surroundings. From the Garden to the Table For a true farming-to-fork experience, one of the most special dining experiences at RAAYA begins in Seb’s Farm. Prior to sitting down for a meal at the on-site eatery, guests can wander through the resort’s organic vegetable gardens and get a sense of the variety of crops that make their way onto the restaurant’s plates. Experience the Culture of the Maldives For Seb, the opportunity to learn about local Maldivian crafts also appeals to his sense of adventure. Visitors to the Artist Zone can take part in the creation of a miniature traditional Maldivian dhoni (boat). Instead of purchasing a souvineer, guests get to make their own unique dhoni and watch it float away on the stream, during the RAAYA Ritual. Thoughtful Experiences Create Memories A true hallmark of RAAYA is the feeling upon arrival at the resort and during the stay itself is one of genuine and thoughtful service. Throughout the resort, smiles, familiar faces and a general sense of easy-paced conviviality contribute to an experience that feels personal and unhurried rather than over-orchestrated. It’s not unusual to be welcomed at your villa with a special printed photo as a reminder of a memorable stay, with the emphasis on memorable experiences rather than traditional luxury. A Stay in the Maldives and More RAAYA by Atmosphere is a collection of experiences that seem to be interconnected rather than separate. With a morning walk on the trail opening up an afternoon of adventure, a game at the RAAYA Hub leading to an impromptu social gathering, a visit to Seb’s Farm enhancing a meal, or a day spent making a dhoni turning into a lifelong souvenir – the possibilities at RAAYA are as expansive as the island itself. Rather than having to choose between switching off and taking on, RAAYA offers both as a natural extension of each other. In short, RAAYA by Atmosphere offers something different – a chance to experience the Maldives not only on an island, but around one in a unique and special way.
