Centara Maldives Resorts Progress in Water Sustainability Initiatives
Located in the Maldives, a place known for its pristine waters and ecosystems, the Maldives depends on the sustainable management of the most vital and essential resource it has, and that is water. Centara’s Maldives resorts have taken a big leap in the management and conservation of water, a vital and essential resource, in the Maldives, a place known for its pristine waters and ecosystems, and the resorts have shown a commitment to the sustainable management and conservation of the Maldives’s vital and essential resource, and that is water, at the Machchafushi Island Resort & Spa by the Centara Collection, Centara Ras Fushi Resort & Spa, and the Atollia, which includes the Centara Grand Lagoon Maldives and the Centara Mirage Lagoon Maldives.
At Machchafushi Island Resort and Spa, all aspects of water usage are monitored and controlled. The objective is to cut down water usage by 10% for every guest night. The low flow faucets and showerheads have been installed. The rainwater harvesting for gardening and recycling of wastewater from the sewage treatment plant for gardening have also been implemented. The plumbing audits are done regularly to avoid any leaks. The laundry has also been optimised for water conservation during low occupancy. The guests are also encouraged to contribute their part by joining the My Green Day program by reusing their towels and bed linen. The guests are rewarded with spa incentives for their contribution. In this way, the whole operation and the guests contribute their part for the conservation of this precious resource in a significant way. The daily usage is monitored, and the objective is to cut down water usage by 10% of the benchmark target of 1,150 litres per head per night. The whole island's water usage is for both guest areas and team member areas. The plumbing, irrigation, and laundry are done in a way that every drop of water is used in a most efficient way.
Sharing his thoughts, Francesco Pompilio, Cluster General Manager of Machchafushi Island Resort & Spa and Centara Ras Fushi Resort & Spa, stated, "Water management is an integral part of our sustainability strategy. With our current initiatives, technology, and efficiencies, we are strategically managing the conservation and protection of this valuable resource. Every drop of water saved only serves to enhance our commitment to the efficient and effective management of water in a sustainable way."
At Atollia by Centara Hotels & Resorts, which comprises Centara Grand Lagoon Maldives and Centara Mirage Lagoon Maldives, the hotel group itself is leading in the implementation of water-saving measures. At Atollia, they have installed three desalination plants, which produce 900 cubic meters of water per day. Desalination plants get their raw material directly from the deep sea, which has a recovery rate of 40%. The total amount of water consumed per head per day is 324 litres/head/day in Centara Mirage Lagoon Maldives, and 359 litres/head/day in Centara Grand Lagoon Maldives, as of 2026. These are the total amounts, including the entire island, which comprises the accommodation of the staff also. These are well below the benchmark of 1,000 litres/head/day.
