Fairmont Maldives, Sirru Fen Fushi is situated on a private island in the tranquil Shaviyani atoll, offering a haven of creativity and progressiveness amidst the stunning Maldivian scenery.
Fairmont Maldives has recently been recognized as the "Most Innovative Resort" at the TTM Awards & Gala 2023, a prestigious accolade that highlights its commitment to innovation. This exceptional retreat not only boasts stunning surroundings but also embraces a forward-thinking approach to sustainability. At the forefront of this commitment is the groundbreaking Sustainability Lab, a pioneering initiative that distinguishes Fairmont Maldives as a leader in eco-friendly luxury.
Innovative Sustainability Lab
This eco-education center aims to address the increasing issue of single-use plastics in the Maldives, a region experiencing a thriving tourism industry but also facing the imminent threat of plastic pollution.
The Sustainability Lab strives to serve as a symbol of transformation by converting plastic waste into customized mementos and one-of-a-kind items. Within this laboratory, specialized equipment is utilized to process plastic materials gathered from the beach, reef, and ocean, resulting in exquisite furnishings, practical school supplies for the local community, and even charming turtle-shaped luggage tags for visitors. With an impressive total of 725 kg of plastic processed thus far, Fairmont Maldives is making substantial strides in minimizing its impact on the environment.
Community Upliftment and Education
The Sustainability Lab not only has a significant impact, but it also has the potential to transform into a recycling hub for the atoll and its neighboring regions. By doing so, it aims to cultivate a mindset of sustainability and responsibility within the local communities. The resort takes proactive measures by engaging nearby islands, urging them to participate in recycling their plastic waste instead of adding to landfills or polluting the ocean.
Educating Eco-Conscious Travellers
The Sustainability Lab acts as the central hub for Fairmont Maldives' extensive sustainability efforts, providing guests with immersive opportunities to engage in conservation research. By means of educational programs and various activities, guests are encouraged to actively contribute to the collection of plastic waste, gain insights into recycling procedures, and even craft their own eco-friendly products.
Programmes for Marine Conservation
Fairmont Maldives has implemented the Turtle Ranger Programme in response to the alarming menace of plastic pollution on sea turtles. Visitors have the opportunity to contribute to conservation efforts, aid in the collection of Photo ID tracking data, and actively safeguard turtle nests. The resort's Marine Biologists organize workshops in the Sustainability Lab, where they employ cutting-edge recycling machines to convert plastic waste into turtle-shaped items.
