This year's Earth Day, a day devoted to environmental action, occurs on Saturday, April 22. The goal of this holiday is to inspire people and organizations all over the world to think about how they can better protect the environment and educate themselves about pollution, wildlife, plants, and other living things.
One of the Indian Ocean's greenest resorts, Fairmont Maldives, Sirru Fen Fushi, is well known for its dedication to sustainable business practices. The resort continuously increases its efforts to lessen its environmental impact while emphasizing the value of sustainability to its visitors, staff, and neighborhood residents.
Several notable programs that promote awareness-building, waste reduction, and energy efficiency include:
Water Desalination and Bottling Facility: The resort's own desalination facility provides the majority of the drinking water. The gratis water, which is provided in reusable glass bottles, helps to significantly reduce the amount of plastic trash.
Reusable Fairmont Bottles: The resort has included reusable water bottles to its sustainability initiatives in order to keep visitors hydrated and do away with single-use plastic. Additionally, water dispensers are conveniently positioned at various points across the island so that visitors can fill their own reusable bottles.
Chef's Garden: Among other things, the enthusiastic gardening staff is successful in growing lemongrass, aubergine, mint, chillies, curry leaves, onions, spinach, bananas, and pineapples.
Compost System: The resort uses a cutting-edge compost system to transform food waste into organic compost for plant soil, reducing the need for disposal.
The Marine Biology team leads visitors on guided snorkeling tours of the Coralarium where they may see the first semi-submerged art gallery in the world and the Maldives' first coral regeneration project, which is an artwork installation by British eco-artist Jason deCaires Taylor.
Sea turtles and their natural environment are protected by the resort's Turtle Ranger Program, which it runs in conjunction with the Olive Ridley Project.
Recycling Workshops at the Sustainability Lab: The group transforms ghost nets and plastic debris into custom souvenirs, unique furniture, and necessary supplies for nearby schools. The resort recycled 3,400 kg of plastic garbage in 2007.
Involvement in international environmental campaigns like Earth Hour, Earth Day, Oceans Day, and Wildlife Day.
Collaboration with Polestar: To offer environmentally friendly airport transportation for visitors, the resort has teamed up with the electric car company Polestar, which focuses on design.
Solar Panels: The resort has solar panels installed to capture solar energy, significantly reducing carbon emissions. 15% of the property's daily energy needs are met by solar energy.
Marine Life Presentations: All visitors are welcome to participate in a fun and educational session led by the Marine Biology team to learn more about the archipelago's pristine but vulnerable environment, as well as some interesting facts about turtles, dolphins, manta rays, sharks, coral reefs, and the resort's sustainability practices.
Green Globe Certification: Due to its several remarkable sustainability initiatives, Fairmont Maldives, Sirru Fen Fushi is the first Fairmont hotel in the world to receive the coveted Green Globe Certification.
