In conjunction with pupils from K. Huraa School, Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa recently commemorated Earth Day with a coral propagation program. The initiative sought to empower the younger generation to have a positive environmental impact while also increasing awareness of the value of sustainability and marine conservation in the Maldives.
The general manager of the resort, Mohamed El Aghoury, gave an introduction speech at the start of the event in which he underlined the significance of youth participation in environmental initiatives and the essential role that sustainability would play in the future of the Maldives. The resort's in-house marine scientist then led the children in an educational session where they learnt the importance of conserving marine life and the different ways they might help with conservation efforts.
Following the informational session, the students had the chance to take part in a practical coral planting activity. The students put coral fragments on metal frames coated in sand, creating a medium for the coral to develop and thrive, with the assistance of specialists from Reefscapers Maldives. Since the initiative's inception in 2020, 400 coral frames have been planted; as a result of this occasion, over 27,000 fragments have been planted and are now flourishing all throughout the resort's underwater environment.
A major tenet of the resort's sustainability initiatives, according to Mohamed El Aghoury, General Manager of Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa, is protecting the natural environment. He expressed his joy at giving the future generation of environmental stewards a platform to learn from and be inspired by. He also emphasized the resort's dedication to other important sustainability initiatives like waste management, a reduction in single-use plastics, and the utilization of environmentally friendly energy sources. He urged the pupils to form little energy-saving practices that will help make the world more environmentally friendly.
The Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa's Adopt-a-Coral program
The Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa launched "Adopt a Coral" as part of Good Travel with Marriott Bonvoy in response to the global pandemic and in response to travelers' growing desire to have a positive impact on the communities they visit, whether locally or abroad. This initiative aims to provide opportunities for guests to forge direct connections with local communities and the environment during their stay, fostering cultural understanding and positive change.
In an effort to support reef habitats and produce new coral, Adopt a Coral at Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa welcomes visitors to take part in the coral fragment plantation program. The resort has partnered with Reefscapers, an organization dedicated to coral propagation, which the Maldivian government designated as stewards of the coral colonies in the Gulhi Falhu lagoon that were planned for destruction as part of a reclamation project. The 250 locals, whose only previous source of work was fishing, now have access to an alternative enterprise thanks to the activity's experienced leadership and hands-on learning opportunities.
