The latest information from the Monetary Authority of Maldives (MMA) shows a favorable development in the aviation sector of the Maldives. International flight arrivals increased by 3% in 2023, reaching a total of 15,883 flights compared to 15,289 in 2022. This indicates a strong recovery and expansion in the country's tourism and travel industry.
The monthly flight distribution provides valuable insights into travel trends to the Maldives. The year commenced strongly in January with 1,673 flights, indicating a robust tourist season. However, there was a noticeable fluctuation in the following months. For example, February and March saw a slight decline, with 1,391 and 1,472 flights respectively. This trend continued in April and May with 1,305 and 1,150 flights, reflecting the seasonal transition in the Maldives' tourism sector.
During the second half of the year, there was a gradual increase in flight numbers. June had the lowest number at 1,082 flights, but July and August saw a steady rise with 1,211 and 1,247 flights, respectively. This trend continued into the last quarter, with October and November maintaining a steady flow at 1,334 and 1,344 flights. December reached the peak with 1,521 flights, coinciding with the holiday season and the start of the high tourist season in the Maldives.
Last year's data revealed an intriguing trend in the distribution of flight types. Out of all international flights, 14,608 were regular commercial flights. Interestingly, the Maldives saw a notable influx of private jet and charter flights, reaching a total of 1,275 for the year. This marks a departure from the previous year, which recorded 2,138 private and chartered flights.
