The Maldivian administration has launched a mega plan to expand the Velana International Airport (VIA) and economic sector to provide to 25 million passengers.
VIA's early development phase is on track to be completed with the launch of a new terminal serving 7.3 million passengers later this year. President Muizzu's announcement aims for 25 million passengers in the next 20 years.
The upcoming project features a new domestic terminal that can accommodate 2000 passengers per hour, a significant jump from its current capacity of 300 per hour. At the same time, plans are in place for a separate terminal catering to low-cost carriers, with a capacity of 1000 people per hour. Furthermore, there are plans to develop a seaplane terminal on the nearby island of Furaanafushi, which will offer space for additional operators in the country.
Plans are in place to increase operational capacity by expanding the fuel farm from 15 million litres to 45 million liters, with a future expansion to 100 million liters. Additionally, the cargo handling capacity is expected to increase from 100 thousand metric tons to 300,000 metric tons in the next phase.
Furthermore, a preservation, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) ability adhering to EASA standard will be recognized. The growth project will establish assorted new amenities and services. A considerable quality is the making of an individual economic zone for VIA, with Funadhoo Island developed as a transport hub for VIA passengers.
