Six Senses Laamu featured in TIME Magazine’s list of World’s Greatest Places 2026
Six Senses Laamu has been chosen to be part of TIME Magazine’s prestigious list of World’s Greatest Places 2026. TIME Magazine’s World’s Greatest Places is a prestigious list that features the best destinations around the world that offer unique experiences and innovations that have a great impact. This is yet another milestone in the company’s outstanding and groundbreaking achievements in marine conservation initiatives and their dedication to sustainable and luxurious experiences in the Maldives.
We are honored to be part of TIME Magazine’s prestigious list of World’s Greatest Places 2026. Being part of this prestigious and outstanding list is an outstanding achievement for our team. Six Senses Laamu’s philosophy has always been to show the world that indeed luxury and environmentalism go hand-in-hand. This is not only a testament to our hard work as a team but also to our local community’s dedication to our beautiful Laamu Atoll ecosystem.” said Marteyne van Well, Regional General Manager.
Located in the beautiful Laamu Atoll in the Maldives, Six Senses Laamu prides itself on its dedication to environmental studies and research initiatives.
The formation of the Maldives Underwater Initiative, with the help of different non-governmental organizations, has played an important role in the improvement of reef rehabilitation and research in the atoll. After the recent global bleaching event in the year 2024, scientists released three million coral larvae into the bleached reefs, which were grown in labs in the atoll. They also cloned endangered coral to help in the rehabilitation of the reefs.
The resort is also the site of pioneering research projects in the Laamu Atoll. The Manta Trust has identified more than 150 different manta rays in the area and is working with the first underwater contactless ultrasound scanner to study pregnant manta rays. The Olive Ridley Project is also conducting important research projects for the study of sea turtles. The current research projects for the study of the importance of seagrass habitats have led to the identification of different species and their importance for the nurseries of different reef fish species.
A defining element of Six Senses Laamu is how these scientific initiatives are woven directly into the guest experience. Visitors can explore the laboratories and galleries at SHELL, participate in marine conservation initiatives, dive alongside working biologists, and earn specialty diving certifications focused on manta rays and reef ecosystems.
