In honour of International Women’s Day, Grand Park Kodhipparu Maldives hosted a celebration devoted to promote addition, empowerment, and the achievement of women while paying main importance to the stirring culture of the Maldives.
The event, held on March 8th, 2024, showcased a sequence of workshops highlighting different local women-led industry of Maldives; follow by a healing art session and delicious snacks and drinks.
Among the exclusive traditions and cultures of Maldives, one of the most enjoyable ones to the eye is surely the traditional clothing of Maldivians called Kasabu Libaas, which translates to “dress”. Kasabu boavalhu, the embellished part of the costume richly decorates the neckline with a system, leisurely fading into history today called Kasabu Viyun. The whole process is one of the most charming aspects of Maldivian culture; feature a short wooden plump vase-like formation called a Gathaa Fai.
In the local language, the skill of weaving is called “Thundu Kunaa Viyun” (reed mat weaving) and is considering a fading form of art that originated from the Gadhdhoo Island. One huge mat takes around one month to weave, which possibly is the reason that it is not practiced by the youth today.
