Guests and team were treating to a snorkeling experience of an era when a baby humpback whale took a sleep in Lhaviyani Atoll, Maldives this week! Dive trainer Anna shares her incident here:
“I had just come out of the water from a Discover Scuba Diving session when a guest come into the dive center and say he saw something big in obverse of his water villa. He ask if it was a whale shark, but when he mention that the big thing was breathing out like a whale and he can see the water splash I told him that this couldn’t be a whale shark and may be a pilot whale.
“Ten minutes later Ibbe, our compressor technician, came back from the seashore and tell me there was something big on our House Reef! I couldn’t see it from the beach and he couldn’t go though the compressor was running so I said I would go and examine. Not pretty sure what I was looking for, I started snorkeling out. I saw my coworker Adi teaching a route at the house reef but didn’t trouble to concern him at this point.
“Two minutes later, I saw the big baby humpback whale resting at a deepness of 7-8m. I took some short videos to have evidence that it was a HUMPBACK WHALE and not a pilot whale! I speed snorkeled rear to get Adi’s awareness and show him the sign for whale shark so I can get him to discontinue the skills and see the whale. I then swim instantly back to get Ibbe.
“I sent messages to people from the other atolls, trainer who may be on boats etc. and within minutes, everybody on the island knows about the whale and was watching from the beach, or got ready to go snorkeling. Komandoo’s General Manager, Navaz, made confident we had a motor boat to go out since the whale was moving fast along the Reef when he was not resting. Shortly before I went on the boat a had a call from Ray, Prodivers Regional Manager Base at Kuredu, who prepared a boat for the Kuredu employees. After while, we had boats from dissimilar islands snorkeling with the whale. Everyone behave very politely. In the water it was not just visitors even the head from Aisha Boat, Captain Ahmed, jumped in and snorkeled with the whale also! Most of the sunrise boats from Prodivers came with their divers and snorkeled. In the afternoon we had still more boats union in, but still everyone stayed a polite distance from the whale and it hung about for at least 24 hours! Boats with guests and team from all Prodivers dive centers in Lhaviyani Atoll were talented to spend time with it once more the following day.
“We contacted different marine biologists to authenticate that the behavior of the whale was usual and it was not harm or ill. The information we got was that baby whales can get missing from time to time and if they do, they look for shelter in shallower area and wait for their relatives to pick them up again.”
