New VIA Terminal Set to Open for Peak Tourism Time

At the Hotelier Maldives GM Forum inauguration, President-elect Dr Mohamed Muizzu expressed confidence in the timely completion of the new VIA terminal in preparation for the upcoming peak tourism season. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between the project's contractors and investors to ensure its readiness before the next peak season.

The contract for the Maldives airport project was initially given to the Bin Laden Group in 2016 but faced delays. Eventually, the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) decided to renew the contract with the Bin Laden Group in 2019.

The Maldives is taking steps to enhance its tourism industry and improve transportation infrastructure. The Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Aishath Nahula, has announced plans to construct 13 new domestic airports and establish a seaplane hub in the southern region. These initiatives aim to increase tourism opportunities and attract more visitors to the Maldives. Additionally, efforts will be made to support tourism development and accommodate larger passenger aircraft for improved connectivity.

The VIA terminal project is a major development valued at USD 357 million. It involves the construction of a state-of-the-art terminal spanning 78,000 square meters. This new terminal will greatly enhance the capacity to accommodate annual passenger arrivals, increasing it from the current 1.5 million to an impressive 7 million.
