Key Sustainability initiative at Patina Maldives consist of:
Zero-Waste Kitchens
Patina Maldives has taken steps to decrease their import reliance by establishing an organic permaculture garden that grows a variety of fresh, pesticide-free produce such as watermelon, sweet melon, okra, eggplant, cucumber, capsicum, and pumpkin. The resort also utilizes bio-digesters to convert all food waste into organic fertilizer. One of the resort's signature restaurants, Plant-based Roots, operates on the root-to-leaf principle to promote a more mindful and responsible way of living to their guests.
Advancements in Green Energy
Patina Maldives is committed to leading the way in sustainable energy practices by investing in renewable sources. The resort has announced plans to increase its use of renewable panels by 2024, which will include the installation of additional rooftop panels and a solar farm. The ultimate goal is for solar energy to provide 50% of the resort's energy needs.
Resort Build and Engineering
Since its inception, sustainable architecture and design have been the guiding principles behind the development of the Fari Islands. The project is the largest hospitality endeavor in the world to utilize offsite manufacturing technology, known as 'Mass Engineered Timber' or 'MET', resulting in a reduction of over 6,000 tons of carbon emissions during production and transportation. Furthermore, all villas were prefabricated to minimize runoff into the marine ecosystem. Departing from the traditional thatched roof structures commonly found in the Maldives, the villas and amenities were designed with flat roofs, allowing for easy installation of solar panels. As a result, the Fari Islands now boast one of the largest solar installations in the Maldives.
Ceramics – Innovative Coral Restoration
Patina Maldives embarked on an innovative coral restoration endeavor by partnering with Kevala Ceramics in Bali, Indonesia. This pioneering collaboration aims to promote reef growth by utilizing ceramic plates as optimal hosts for live coral fragments.
Stewart Moore, the CEO and Founder of EarthCheck, commended Patina Maldives for its exceptional commitment to sustainability, expressing his congratulations to the entire team. He acknowledged Patina Maldives as a highly esteemed member of a worldwide community of tourism operators who are devoted to creating a positive impact.
