Studio MK27, based in Brazil, utilized wood, rattan, and stone textures to construct the structures for a vacation retreat on the Fari Islands archipelago in the Maldives. 

In recent years, the studio has envisioned a shelter for a unique living experience for Maldivian tourist: a temporary home amidst the vibrant endless blue, the wildlife, and the open skies. Consequently, the new hotel in Maldives has been carefully designed to respect its environment and aims to offer shade and comfort to enhance the stunning surrounding landscape.

Patina is located on the largest of the four Fari Islands, which form a new man made quad of islands. The island covers 42 hectares and, despite being relatively new, it is lush and verdant, with a beautiful golden beach and a tranquil lagoon. In addition to Patina, the island is also home to the Fari Marina Village, a 20-berth marina and social hub where guests can dine and socialize. Guests of The Ritz-Carlton and Patina, as well as future guests of Capella Maldives, will have full access to the marina, as it is set to complete the trio of resorts in 2023.

At Roots, a signature restaurant featured at all Patina resorts, chef Derrick Wales, a leader in plant-based dining in the Maldives, guides diners through a culinary journey with expertly crafted dishes made from ingredients sourced from the island's flourishing herb and vegetable gardens. The degustation menu starts with a nourishing cauliflower quinoa, moves on to artichoke prepared in three different ways, and culminates with a dairy-free cheesecake that remarkably mimics the original in taste.


Chef Caesar Perez from Brasa, a South American steakhouse, infuses his restaurant's succinct menu at the Fari Marina Village with the flavors of his Mexican and Texan upbringing, along with his expertise gained from working in Copenhagen and Shanghai. Guests are offered an intimate view of the culinary action from stools facing the show kitchen. The lobster ceviche, featuring zesty citrus notes, serves as a delightful starter, followed by the octopus coated in a sticky char siu. The standout dish is the perfectly pink Wagyu strip loin, seasoned simply with rock salt and accompanied by crispy truffle fries and a side of chimichurri.

Guests at Patina can partake in a range of activities that resemble the ultimate Maldives bucket list, each with a distinctive Patina touch. Dolphin spotting takes place aboard Patina’s impressive Adastra superyacht, often likened to an aquatic Batmobile due to its innovative design. Farine, a warm all-wood venue converted from a bakery into a charcuterie and tasting room, offers exclusive tastings and private dinners, ideal for culinary events. Additionally, the classic overwater spa has been relocated on land, featuring discreet cubic treatment rooms nestled within the verdant scenery.
