Fuvahmulah is the island the Maldives travel industry doesn't quite know what to do with. No lagoon. A freshwater lake that has no geographical right to exist on a coral island in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Waves breaking directly on shore. Marine life that has no business being this accessible tiger sharks, thresher sharks, hammerheads all within reach of a local guesthouse stay.
Cottage 316 is that guesthouse.
It's a small, honest property. Clean rooms, air conditioning, private bathrooms, Wi-Fi. Nothing that photographs dramatically. But walk out the door and you're on Fuvahmulah, which is one of the most genuinely distinctive places in the Maldives and almost nobody comes here.

What Makes Fuvahmulah Different - And Why It Matters
Most Maldives islands sit inside lagoons. The water is calm, shallow, and protected by a surrounding reef. Fuvahmulah doesn't work like that. It sits outside any atoll structure, exposed to open ocean, surrounded by deep water that drops sharply from the island's edges.
That depth and exposure is exactly what attracts the pelagic species. Tiger sharks patrol the southern tip regularly. Thresher sharks appear at cleaning stations in the early morning. Hammerheads pass through in schools. Oceanic mantas feed in the nutrient-rich water. None of this requires a liveaboard or an expensive resort. It requires being on Fuvahmulah.
Activities
Diving
🦈 Tiger shark dive - The island's signature experience. The southern tip dive site produces reliable encounters. Experienced divers only current and depth involved.
🐟 Thresher shark morning dive - Early departure required, usually 6am. Cleaning station encounters at depth.
🔨 Hammerhead school dives - Seasonal but spectacular when present.
🐠 Reef diving - The island's reef walls are healthy and diverse beyond the pelagics.
Snorkelling
🤿 Shore snorkelling - Available but open ocean conditions make this more challenging than typical Maldives lagoon snorkelling. Experienced swimmers only.
🐢 Turtle encounters - Common in the shallower areas around the island.
Land Activities
🏊 Freshwater lake visit - One of only two natural freshwater lakes in the Maldives. Completely different ecosystem from the surrounding ocean. Go early morning.
🚲 Island cycling - Fuvahmulah is large enough to cycle around. Rental available locally.
🌅 Sunset watching - The open ocean horizon here produces some of the most dramatic sunsets in the Maldives.
